Male Breast Reduction

Enlarged male breasts, although rarely discussed, are a common condition. This phenomenon is called gynecomastia and in most cases, there is no known cause, although there has been some correlation with various drugs, such as steroids, or medical conditions. For men living in such California communities as Pleasanton, Livermore, and Dublin, male breast reduction in Tracy by Dr. Thomas McNemar can make an enormous change in their lives.

Why Choose Male Breast Reduction?

Men who feel self-conscious about their appearance are helped with breast reduction surgery. The procedure removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts. In extreme cases, excess skin is removed, resulting in a contoured chest that is flatter and firmer. Dr. McNemar often performs this surgery in conjunction with liposuction to recontour other, adjacent areas.

How Is Male Breast Reduction Performed?

Dr. McNemar typically performs male breast reduction as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia with sedation; he may recommend general anesthesia in specific cases. Surgical removal of excess tissue can be achieved by direct excision or with liposuction. Where fatty tissue is the primary source of over-development, liposuction techniques remove fat to recontour the chest. Incisions hidden at the areola (the dark pigmented skin surrounding the nipple), breast crease, or in the underarm allow for removal of excess gladular tissue and recontouring. The procedure also can include areola reduction.

What Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Recovery Like?

Initial swelling following the procedure usually dissipates in 2 to 4 weeks. Many patients return to work in just a few days. It typically takes about a month for patients to be ready to return to strenuous activities, weight lifting, and contact sports.

When Will I Reach My Final Results After Male Breast Reduction?

Final results appear in 2 to 4 months, with continued fading of incision lines for about 1 year. Significant weight gain can reverse results, so patients need to watch their diet and get plenty of exercise.
