How Is Otoplasty Performed?

Otoplasty, which addresses concerns about the size, shape, or position of the ears, is typically performed using a local anesthetic with sedation for adults; general anesthesia may be used for younger patients. You can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain or discomfort. Dr. McNemar may also prescribe a stronger pain medicine for moderate pain. Take all medication exactly as directed. It’s important not to do anything that could potentially injure the ears. A sponge bath or careful bathing in a tub is allowed, but use caution to keep the dressing clean and dry.

Most individuals can return to regular activities 2 weeks after the surgery.

You’ll see the initial results when the bandages are removed, but residual swelling can take up to 3 months to subside and reveal the final results.
