Otoplasty
Misshapen or protruding ears can lead to schoolyard teasing for children or feeling self-conscious as an adult. Dr. Thomas McNemar performs otoplasty, also known as ear surgery or ear pinning, at his Tracy, California, plastic surgery practice to improve the appearance of a child or adult’s ears.
How Is Otoplasty Performed?
Otoplasty, which addresses concerns about the size, shape, or position of the ears, is typically performed using a local anesthetic with sedation for adults; general anesthesia may be used for younger patients. Depending on the reason for undergoing cosmetic ear surgery, Dr. McNemar makes incisions either behind the ear or within the inner creases of the ear.
After making the incision, Dr. McNemar carefully removes, reshapes, or repositions cartilage and skin, securing the desired position with stitches inside the ear. Additional stitches are used to close incisions.

Otoplasty provides numerous benefits, both physical and emotional. Ear pinning for protruding ears enhances facial harmony. Many people, especially children, experience increased self-esteem and confidence after an otoplasty procedure.
Recovery and Results
Otoplasty recovery is generally straightforward, with most patients experiencing minimal discomfort. Following surgery, you’ll wear bandages for a few days to protect your ears and support healing.
You can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain or discomfort. Dr. McNemar may also prescribe a stronger pain medicine for moderate pain. Take all medication exactly as directed. It’s important not to do anything that could potentially injure the ears. A sponge bath or careful bathing in a tub is allowed, but use caution to keep the dressing clean and dry.
Most individuals can return to regular activities 2 weeks after the surgery.
You’ll see the initial results when the bandages are removed, but residual swelling can take up to 3 months to subside and reveal the final results.
Patients considering otoplasty travel from Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin, and the surrounding San Francisco Bay Area to have Dr. McNemar perform cosmetic ear surgery. You can request a consultation using the online form or call our office at (209) 834-0626 to schedule an appointment.
